Bipartisan support emerged in the U.S. House of Representatives as members introduced the AI Workforce Training Act, aimed at promoting the training of employees in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The legislation was proposed by Representatives Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) and seeks to provide a tax credit to companies investing in AI training for their workforce.
Under the proposed bill, businesses would be eligible for a tax credit of 30% on qualified expenses related to training employees in AI-related skills, with a cap of $2,500 per employee annually. Lawler stated that the initiative is crucial for preparing the American workforce for the anticipated high-paying tech jobs that AI and quantum computing will create.
In addition to the tax incentives, the legislation mandates that the Departments of Treasury, Labor, and Commerce initiate a public outreach campaign to inform businesses about the availability of these tax credits. Gottheimer emphasized the urgency of equipping American workers for the evolving job landscape shaped by AI advancements.
This legislative effort comes amid ongoing discussions in Congress regarding the implications of AI technology on the labor market. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has voiced concerns about potential job displacement due to AI, highlighting the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact on workers. Warren pointed to a recent loss of over 100,000 manufacturing jobs and warned that further job losses could lead to significant economic challenges.
As lawmakers continue to navigate the complexities of AI integration into the workforce, the AI Workforce Training Act represents a concerted effort to balance innovation with workforce preparedness.
