Apple unveils the iPhone Duo folding phone, priced from $3,000

Apple Unveils Foldable iPhone Duo Under New CEO

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on Wednesday, marking its entry into the foldable smartphone market and the most substantial redesign of its flagship product in years. The passport-sized device opens into a wide internal display that can be used horizontally or vertically, while a smaller screen remains accessible when it is folded. Apple says the titanium-bodied Duo is its thinnest phone when open.

In Canada, the Duo will start at $2,999, compared with $1,999 US, or roughly $2,760 Cdn at the exchange rate cited in the report. Apple did not immediately explain the difference. Pre-orders are scheduled to begin October 17, with general availability on October 23.

The launch was the first event led by John Ternus since he succeeded Tim Cook as chief executive. Ternus described the Duo as a pocket-sized device offering an iPad-like experience, supported by a custom hinge, dual displays and consistent aspect ratios. He also presented Apple’s artificial-intelligence strategy, emphasizing on-device processing and user control of data. An updated Siri is expected to support 300,000 apps at launch.

Apple also introduced the non-folding iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, starting at $1,749 and $1,899, respectively. The models include the A20 Pro chip for running advanced AI models on the device. An Apple Reference Image standard is intended to verify photographs taken with the phones, while support for SynthID will help identify AI-generated or edited images. The reference feature will not be offered in the European Union or China.

Other announcements included AirPods with noise cancellation, upgraded models with wireless charging and touch volume controls, plus the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, which Apple positioned as health-focused updates.

The launch puts Ternus at the centre of Apple’s effort to expand its hardware lineup and persuade consumers to accept a roughly $3,000 foldable phone.
