Anthropic surpasses OpenAI in valuation, nears $1 trillion

Anthropic Raises $65 Billion at $965 Billion Valuation

Anthropic announced Thursday that it has raised $65 billion in a Series H financing round, valuing the artificial intelligence company at $965 billion. The new valuation makes Anthropic one of the most highly valued AI companies in Silicon Valley and places it above rival OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion after a recent funding round.

The latest financing was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. Anthropic said the total includes $15 billion in previously committed investments, including $5 billion from Amazon. The round nearly triples the company’s valuation from February, when it was valued at $380 billion.

Anthropic’s growth has been driven in part by demand for its Claude products, including Claude Code, an AI coding assistant. The company reported a $47 billion revenue run rate, up from $30 billion earlier this year and $10 billion in annual revenue last year. On the same day as the funding announcement, Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.8, its latest model. It has also introduced Claude Mythos Preview, a cybersecurity-focused model available to selected companies.

Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao said the funding would help Anthropic meet customer demand, continue research and expand the availability of Claude across workplace settings.

The financing comes as major AI companies move closer to public markets. OpenAI is reportedly preparing to file a confidential IPO prospectus and could go public as soon as September, according to CNBC. Anthropic is also said to be preparing for a possible IPO, though the timing remains uncertain.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which merged with his AI startup earlier this year, has also filed IPO documents. The combined company was valued at $1.25 trillion following the merger.

The developments reflect continued investor interest in artificial intelligence companies, particularly those with fast-growing revenue, enterprise customers and advanced AI models.
