Alaska Airlines saved 1.2 million gallons of jet fuel with AI

Alaska Airlines has teamed up with Air Space Intelligence to implement an AI tool called the Flyways AI Platform, which suggests optimal flight routes based on historical flight traffic and predicted weather data. This collaboration, which started three years ago and was recently renewed, has proven to be beneficial for Alaska Airlines, with half of their flight plans now including routes suggested by Flyways.

Pasha Saleh, the head of corporate development at Alaska Airlines, highlighted the challenges faced when planning airline flights, despite the seemingly straightforward nature of the task. He mentioned that the lack of comprehensive information available to human planners often leads to last-minute diversions and delays, resulting in inconvenience for passengers and financial losses for the airline.

The Flyways AI Platform, developed by Air Space Intelligence in close cooperation with Alaska Airlines, has been instrumental in addressing these challenges. By analyzing a variety of data sources, including historical flight information and real-time variables like wind speeds and airspace restrictions, Flyways generates suggested flight routes for dispatchers to consider. While the AI algorithm behind Flyways is used to predict the best route, human dispatchers ultimately have the final say in approving and implementing the plan.

The results of this partnership have been promising, with Alaska Airlines reporting a significant reduction in fuel consumption thanks to the adoption of Flyways' recommendations. In fact, the airline's sustainability report for 2023 indicated a savings of over 1.2 million gallons of fuel. This reduction in fuel consumption is crucial for Alaska Airlines as it aims to become the most fuel-efficient airline by 2025.
